“One Saturday afternoon I was in a blue funk. I went to the studio, took a couple of blocks of redwood and crafted this sculpture. It was finished with carving marks and painted bright red. For more than a year it sat in our living room (my proving ground). The more I looked at it the more it grabbed me. I decided it was worthy of fabrication on a monumental scale. The resulting 7 foot sculpture was accepted for the annual exhibition in Downtown Colorado Springs where they purchased it for their permanent collection.

I have been asked repeatedly; 'What does it mean?' Part of its beauty is that it carries so many meanings; X marks the spot, the X of hugs and kisses but for me it is the X of mathematics. The mystery we solve for. The answer.” -Michael Shewmaker
